The TV Times was all for prompting a bit of moral hysteria in June 1981, featuring Adam Ant on the cover and asking. ‘How would you feel if your son looked like this?’, a traditional response to pop music from the days of Mick Jagger through David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Johnny Rotten et al.

 

Who better to put the thorny questions to than a host of celebrities? Una Stubbs was of the opinion that, “Fashion is harmless”, which was not quite Joan Collins’ take on it all.

 

“I abhor the sight of pathetic little creatures with their sickly white faces, black eye make-up and hair dyed green. They represent a rebellious, unattractive movement. I wouldn’t allow my children to go around looking like that. Parents that [do] are nothing but weak-kneed jellyfish.” Who knew jellyfish had knees?
