February 1995 and Golf Monthly was coming to terms with Nick Faldo’s decision to dump the European Tour and concentrate on his career in the United States.
An extensive interview with Ken Schofield, Executive Director of the tour, showed him in bullish mood: “We respect Faldo’s decision but the Tour is not going to disappear.” In spite of that, the tour had come under criticism for some of its venues, the TV deal with Sky TV and playing tournaments out of Europe, all of which seem hard to imagine today.
But in the spirit of attacking problems head on, David Davies suggested that it was time to spice up the European tour by bringing in more match play events. Witness for the prosecution was Seve Ballesteros: “Stroke play, four rounds in a week, is boring. We could have far more match play. That is real golf.”
Meanwhile, Greg Norman had got his sights set on creating a breakaway World Tour according to Peter McEvoy’s column, as you can read here. Plus ça change, eh?
