Liverpool might be bound for the Premier League title this season, but before Bill Shankly arrived on Merseyside, they were stuck in the Second Division and going nowhere fast.
It was Shankly that rebuilt Liverpool and set in motion over 60 years of regularly challenging for the glittering prizes at home and abroad. In February 2000, FourFourTwo looked at Shankly’s early days at Anfield, looking back at how he turned a club that he described as, ‘Candidly, a shambles,’ into promotion winners.
One of his very early signings, Ian St John, said, ‘He asked me about joining Liverpool, but I wasn’t keen…before we knew it, we were sitting in a Rolls Royce bound for Liverpool. I’m sure if I hadn’t agreed to sign, he would have kidnapped me.’
