One of the pleasures of reading through old magazines is that we can do it with hindsight. Take the July 1998 issue of FourFourTwo for instance.
When it went to press, it was still assumed that Paul Gascoigne would be a central part of England’s team, and a feature on everyone’s opinion on him was commissioned. By the time it reached the newsstands, Gazza had been dropped, taken the news less than well, and was yesterday’s news. For a month or so anyway.
But the FourFourTwo article remains riveting reading…
‘A chicken without a head.’ Dave Sexton, England U21 manager.
‘Given the choice, most of us would sooner buy Dean Saunders than Gazza.” Neville Southall, 1990.
‘I’ve asked our coach driver, if he sees him in the tunnel at Wembley, to try and knock him down. I don’t think we’ll stop him otherwise.” Brian Clough before the 1991 FA Cup final.
