It took 52 cracks at the US Masters to find a British winner, but it was Sandy Lyle who finally broke the curse and won the green jacket, an achievement commemorated in the May 1988 edition of Golf Monthly.
“It was a victory which, in terms of pure drama, ranked with Arnold Palmer’s win in 1960 when he birdied the last two holes to beat the luckless Ken Venturi. And in terms of a sporting achievement, Lyle’s win must rank among the great stories of champions who have dragged themselves off the floor to snatch victory when all seemed lost.”
Lyle talked Golf Monthly through the extraordinary events of the 72nd hole, and one of the greatest bunker shots of all time, all leading to that steely final putt from 10 feet to win the crown.
