Fifty years ago this week, all eyes were on Hickstead for the Men’s World Show Jumping Championships.

Defending the title was David Broome, who had carried off the crown in La Baule in 1970. His victory meant that the competition would be staged in Britain in 1974, and where better than Hickstead?

Horse & Hound ran the rule over his chances of keeping hold of the title, while looking at some of the major competitors including fellow Brits Paddy McMahon and Harvey Smith, Ireland’s Eddie Macken, West German Alwin Schockemöhle and the Italian d’Inzeo brothers.

In the end, there was disappointment for the home riders, West Germany’s Hartwig Steenken the winner, Macken and Hugo Simon of Austria completing the podium.
