Horse & Hound has always had a penchant for getting its Christmas issue in early and 1991 was no exception, coming out on 14 November, just to give you time to get your Christmas gifts in the post in a pre-Amazon world.
As well as all manner of equestrian garb, books and equipment with which to kit out the family, there were ideas on how to spice up Christmas week with a winter picnic. Recipes abounded for a Creamy Onion Soup, a Country Terrine, Apple & Pear Chutney and Whisky & Raisin Chocolate Cake – the ingredients for the latter made you wonder of you couldn’t just ignore the first three and go straight to the cake. All of it to be washed down by orange gin and a quick burst on the breathalyser of course.
The recipes have stood the test of time, so you can find some fine Christmas fare here.
