Christmas is, of course, a time for peace, goodwill and rampant shopping.
Golf Monthly has, like all magazines, long laid its pages open for the forces of commerce to flog their pre-Christmas wares, including Slazenger who had a full page advert prepared for the November 1956 issues.
Golf balls might be a fairly utilitarian gift, but Slazenger had taken the trouble to package them in “Christmas gift wrappers”, in packs “that add gaiety to the decoration of any Christmas tree”. And there, indeed, was Santa himself whacking one straight down the middle on the box. You could get 12 balls for £2.55, one for every day of Christmas.
Find the Slazenger advert, and plenty more that perfectly evoke the mid-50s before the Mad Men really took hold, here.
