In days of Christmas past, before computer games took hold of the world, the young rugby enthusiast would have awoke on the big day hoping that Santa had delivered for him a box containing the Subbuteo Rugby game, plugged in the Christmas issue of Rugby World in January 1979.
With the special scrum device – that was created to a completely different scale to the players – and the special kicker for those tricky conversions, while the rugby version never caught on the way the football game did, Subbuteo rugby was still a popular choice.
The box came complete with two teams, goals, playing pitch, balls, the scrummer device, full-back kickers and a rule book, all for £7.95.
