Autosport made precious few concessions to Christmas in its December 24 edition in 1970, featuring a particularly unfestive chap on the front cover who might well have been The Stig’s grandfather.

Ye Olde Yuletide Road Test was similarly eccentric, John Bolster getting behind the wheel of a Scania LB140S three-axle truck which very few people would be finding in their Christmas stocking the following day – not unless they had absolutely huge legs anyway.

Bolster, however, was converted. “Time was when heavy commercial vehicles were deafeningly noisy, smelly and uncomfortable with negligible performance and steering that demanded the muscles of Hercules. As I swept silently along in my 350bhp Scania, enjoying the luxurious comfort and steering with my fingertips, I felt nothing but pity for the drivers of probate cars as they bounced up and down over the bumps in their tiny little boxes!”
