Autosport has long been renowned for its ability to shine a light on the technical intricacies of motor vehicles, and that scientific approach has long been aided by some remarkable illustrations that take you, quite literally, under the bonnet and beneath the bodywork.
It hasn’t always just been restricted to the machinery at the cutting edge of motorsport though. In the April 25 1969 issue, they turned the microscope on the Austin Maxi, ‘Leyland’s car for the 1970s’.
Described as a ‘1500cc five-door saloon featuring transverse engine, front-wheel drive and hydrolastic suspension, allied to a 13-ft. long body powered by an overhead-cam four-cylinder engine driving through a five speed gearbox. In this country it will cost £979 tax paid.’
