Star columnist Bryan Robson led from the front, saying, “I shall be doing my utmost to persuade the lads causing trouble at football matches to behave themselves before they destroy the game.
“Make no mistake, if they go on as they are, football will be a dead duck in England…We footballers will do our best. But the Government and others must remember that this is not only a football problem, it is society’s problem.”
