The ever increasing value of horseflesh preoccupied Horse & Hound in its 10 August 1979 issue following the syndication of the Derby winner Troy to stand at Lord Porchester’s Highclere Stud.

If completed, it “would value him at £7,200,000 or, taking an exchange rate of $2.25 to the £sterling, $16,200,000 – just $200,000 more than the sum for which the 1978 American Triple Crown winner Affirmed was syndicated.”

Comparisons were made in the article, citing Mill Reef’s 1971 value of $5million and The Minstrel, winner of the Derby in 1977, just two years before Troy, of $9million. There are plenty more details on how prices were going through the roof here.
