There is always plenty of debate about who is England’s greatest ever player. One name that generally doesn’t feature too often, but perhaps should have, is that of Paul Gascoigne.

 

The Gazzamania that followed the 1990 World Cup all proved too much for him to handle and injuries and the odd self-inflicted wound ended up taking the edge off one of the sharpest talents to ever emerge in the English game.

 

In 1997, FourFourTwo looked back to that annus mirabilis of 1990 when Paul Gascoigne took Italia ‘90 by storm and took his country to the verge of a World Cup win which, if nothing else, would have also spared us that ‘30 years of hurt’ record…
