After a lengthy hiatus, Dr Who finally returned to TV screens in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as The Doctor.
Not that he hung around much, for after just one season, he was gone and that central feature of the whole series, the regeneration of the Time Lord, was set up for the last episode, airing in June 2005.
TV Times rather gave the game away by picturing Eccleston alongside his new self, David Tennant, who revealed inside that it was watching Dr Who as a child that inspired him to be an actor. “From that point onwards, I absolutely didn’t want to do anything else.”
Given Tennant’s arrival on the scene, the man behind the reboot, Russell T. Davies rather unnecessarily added, “I specifically set out to target women…we’ve had a lot of strong, female characters, a lot more emotion and a lot more fun. There’s also none of that dull, military hardware side to it – that’s a real turn-off.”
