Prime Minister Harold MacMillan was the cover star of the 14 September 1963 edition of Horse & Hound, photographed at the Bucks County Show in Aylesbury. The photo was appropriate because these turned out to be the dog days (sorry) of MacMillan’s premiership, ‘Supermac’ leaving office on 18 October.

Elsewhere, the historic Hambleton Cup was bring revived after it had last been run on the Hambleton Hills in 1714. It was believed that the cup, given to the winner, was still in existence some 249 years later, recorded as having been sold by Christie’s for £1,400 in 1933 then resold to a buyer in the USA some time later.

It had been hoped that the owner of the trophy might be able to attend the revived race, if not the trophy, but, “Enquiries were thwarted when it was discovered that the American purchaser was a lady who had been married three times and that she and her three husbands were all deceased.” With luck like that, maybe the idea of reviving the cup should have been left alone… Make your own mind up by reading the full story here.
