February 1972 and Autosport featured John Davenport’s brilliant summary of the Monte Carlo rally, illustrated by some great photography, including on the cover.
“After what was one of the most exciting Monte Carlo rallies for years, Sandro Munari and Mario Mannucci brought off an outright win for Lancia, something which the Turin firm have been so close to doing for so many years,” wrote Davenport.
His recording of the attrition rate of vehicles reads more like an account of a war torn battlefield than a motoring event, but it’s compelling stuff and something that any fan of rallying would do well to revisit here.
