FourFourTwo often shows footballers no mercy and that was true of the 1996 issue when they gave over a feature to detailing some of the most horrendous misses in footballing history.
From Gordon Smith blowing Brighton’s chance to win the FA Cup for the first time in 1984, to Geoff Thomas hitting the corner flag rather than the back of the net for England, or Ronnie Rosenthal hitting the bar rather than, quite literally, an open goal for Liverpool against Aston Villa, all human strife is here.
The magazine did miss a sitter of its own though, claiming that Jeff Astle fired over the bar against Brazil in 1970. He did, of course, put his shot wide of the post instead.
