FourFourTwo’s correspondence from May 2012 saw Wilko Wilkes getting on the penalty soapbox – only he’d moved it six yards back.
“In my opinion there is a problem that needs solving more than any other, which never gets questioned: penalties are far too easy to score.
“Penalties should either be scrapped and free-kicks taken from where the foul took place, or they should be moved back to 16 or 18 yards to give the keeper a chance. With the rules as they are, penalties have far too much swing on a game.”
Given we’ve had a dozen years of daft rule changes since, it looks like this one is never going to get a chance, whatever Wilko’s detailed reasoning, which you can read here.
