It was a special edition of En Route in September 1973 as HM the Queen adorned the front cover of the magazine, pictured meeting some members of the Caravan Club. You can read all about it here

The magazine’s editorial noted that this was “Royal recognition of the growth of the pursuit and that something like a million Britons are interested in touring caravanning.”

The visit to the Yellowcraig site was featured within the magazine in a picture spread along with a report on the Duke of Edinburgh’s close attention to detail. “He spent some time in David and Hilda Knight’s outfit examining every corner – including the toilet compartment.”

The Queen’s questions, “Were typically feminine. How do you manage with the cooking? Isn’t it a bit cramped when the family’s around? How many miles do you travel on holiday.”

No record exists of the Royal Family purchasing a state caravan thereafter, but the Official Secrets Act plays things pretty close to its chest…
