We turn to the pages of Rugby World, a magazine that turned over a full page to its cartoonist, Naylor.

Having to come up with four funny cartoons or more every month is no easy task, so they could be a bit hit and miss, especially viewed from 54 years distance.

What is funny peculiar is just how many of the jokes cover the same preoccupations that exist in the modern day – fear of being replaced on the team because of injury, being selected for the XV overriding any other engagement, literally, and jet packs completing conversions. Well, ok, not jet packs.

You can see Naylor’s submissions for December 1970 here, and then explore the rest of his catalogue throughout The Magazine Archive.
