A thought provoking illustration on a front cover can speak volumes, though perhaps necessity was the mother of this particular invention from Golf Monthly back in December 1944.

With the war still raging, albeit that an end, of sorts, was gradually coming into sight, there were still plenty of troops stationed overseas, short on creature comforts, particularly with Christmas coming. The two picked out in this Golf Monthly cartoon were huddled away from the rain and grateful – or not – for a Yuletide airgraph from the local golf club.

Golf Monthly also reminded readers that once they’d finished with their copy, they should send it off to those fighting overseas for whom news of the latest golf tournament or the prospect of a putter they might get in their hands sooner, rather than later, were seen as an aid to morale.
