One of the great opportunities that the monthly magazine has is the scope to talk to people who aren’t necessarily in the limelight but who play a vital role in bringing a sport to the public.

December 1977 saw Rugby World’ David Norrie talking to top photographer Colin Elsey, whose work regularly graced the magazine’s pages, followed by a couple of pages dedicated to his work from previous years.

A former player with Wasps, Elsey pointed out that, “It does help to have a knowledge of the game. You are able to anticipate certain things and what is likely to happen.”

Back then, there were no digital cameras, everything was shot to film and you had to be sparing with how many shots you took, such were the costs of the film and of developing. Nor were the cameras and lenses as sophisticated as they are today, which contributed to one of the rare pictures that got away for Elsey.
