Golf has joined the Olympian firmament in recent times and Paris 2024 will be the third consecutive Games at which some of the world’s finest golfers will be chasing a gold medal.
Such a prospect looked a long way off in May 2002, but Golf Monthly still fancied getting in on the Olympic act. So it embarked on a series with one of Britain’s greatest ever Olympians, Steve Redgrave, noting that the ‘champion rower has one sporting mountain left to climb. Redgrave, who has flirted with golf for 14 years, has undertaken a challenge to reduce his handicap from 17 to nine within one year as part of his commitment to the children’s charity SPARKS.’
Working with David Whelan, the head pro at the David Leadbetter Golf Academy in Tyne & Wear, Redgrave certainly had the right attitude; “You’ve got to have a commitment to getting it right and that’s what I’m determined to do.”
You can see the state of Redgrave’s game at the start of the challenge here and then follow his progress through a year’s worth of Golf Monthly magazines across the archive. Not only is it a fascinating story, it doubles as a great reminder of the steps you need to take to get your own game in shape.
