The greats in many sports arrive at the pinnacle by thinking outside the box, and that was exactly what Justin Rose was doing in Golf Monthly when trying to borrow some elements of Jonny Wilkinson’s kicking game in rugby union to add to his own golf game.

Looking at the rituals in his preparation, Rose picked out routine, alignment and visualisation, though visualising trying to ‘Kick a Coke can out of the hands of an imaginary woman, Doris, who sits in a particular seat behind the goal’ would probably get him fined these days.

Rose’s piece is fascinating, not least the likening of Wilkinson’s kicking technique to an upside down golf swing. If you want to rethink your approach ahead of the return to the course in better weather, you can do worse than start here.
