The Premier League might be the world’s favourite league, but it hasn’t managed to get all of the greats here over its existence. Lionel Messi is perhaps the most famous one who got away, but perhaps the biggest miss of them all was Gabriel Batistuta.

Interviewed in FourFourTwo in May 2000, Batigol admitted that, “I would like to do one or two years in England before I leave football. I have the idea in my head and I very much hope it will happen.”

Sadly it never materialised, much to the relief of defenders everywhere, but it was definitely our loss, as a wide ranging interview that you can read here made clear.

“I never waste time thinking over the goals I have scored or the records I have set. What’s important for me is the next goal that I score, the next record. I always want to improve…Records only serve one purpose: to get up your critics’ noses.”
