Every golfer, from those at the top, to the most amateur of hackers, has fever dreams of the perfect round. But what exactly does it look like?

Golf Monthly had stab at piecing it together in November 2006, selecting the best shot ever played from every club in the bag. Take the 1-iron for instance. The pick of them all, Jack Nicklaus in the final round of the 1972 US Open at Pebble beach, on the 17th.

“Playing into the teeth of the wind at the par-3 17th…Nicklaus fired a 1-iron that hit the flagstick and stopped inches from the hole for a tap-in birdie. The Golden Bear went on to win his third US Open with a 290 total, the second highest by a champion since the Second World War.”

Shots from Seve, Tiger, Tom Watson, Gene Sarazen and Sandy Lyle are amongst the others in a superb article that started plenty of arguments in the clubhouse then, and would still do the same today. You can read all about them here.
