November 10 1963 and it was time for the Royal Variety Performance to be screened by ITV, although the event actually took place six days earlier.
Amid trad Royal Variety fare such as Charlie Drake, Flanders & Swann, Eric Sykes, Steptoe & Son and Pinky & Perky came the bill-toppers The Beatles, the Merseybeat pop combo sensation that had been getting toes tapping the length and breadth of the nation, pop pickers.
With Beatlemania in full swing, TV Times used this opportunity to get in on the act, featuring the Fab Four on a wraparound cover at the start of a four part series where each Beatle was put under the microscope by his colleagues.
It was Paul’s turn this week, John recalling that, “He joined me in a group called The Quarrymen. He was playing an electric drill at the time and I realised right away that he had talent.”
“Success hasn’t changed him at all,” added Ringo. “He’s just the same, unspoiled big-head he always was,” added George.
