In the summer of 1982, the Caravan Club was celebrating its 75th anniversary and around that time, the National Caravan Council commissioned a survey to earn more about ‘Mr & Mrs Average Caravanner’.
Apparently, one million households owned a caravan, the highest proportion of them being a family of four. Some 92% of them had taken a caravan holiday in Britain, while 13% had been adventurous enough to go abroad in the previous three years.
As to accessories, 47% reckoned that a toilet was absolute necessary, while the remaining 53% were presumably Immodium addicts. Some 49% of caravans had a fridge, and around 75% had a TV, which shows you where our priorities lay, even in 1982.
There was also a familiar gripe, according to En Route. “A third said that [greater use of their caravan] would be helped by better weather – unfortunately, however, they were not able to explain ow this might be arranged.”
