No discussion of illustration, certainly not regarding the Horse & Hound set, could neglect the influence of Norman Thelwell.

 

The name immediately conjures up visions of a squadron of little Pony Club members, holding onto their over enthusiastic steeds for dear life as they turn out at the local Gymkhana.

 

Yet it wasn’t until 2004 that Thelwell’s art was given its due in a special exhibition, the 27 November 2003 issue of ‘Horse & Hound’ detailing the preparations for getting the great man’s work in front of his adoring public.

 

Thelwell described his own work as ‘demented equestrians on frenzied mounts’, but there was far more to it than that, as an excellent H&H article makes clear. You can read the full thing here – don’t miss it Penelope!
