Despite a front cover of Horse & Hound on 4 April 2013 that seems to suggest Katie Walsh is using her horse Seabass to protect her from the weather, the interview with Katie inside the magazine, on the brink of the Grand National, was fascinating stuff.
Heading into the Grand National, in which the combination had finished third just a year earlier, was Katie about to make history as the first woman to ride the winner? Certainly she felt better prepared than in 2012…
“All I could do or think in the fortnight before was dream about Seabass. I was grand as soon as I was on the horse until the trumpets started up to signal the horses coming out on to the course – my heart nearly jumped through my chest. But I’m not half so bad this time.”
There was to be no repeat of the ‘National Velvet’ movie in 2013, Seabass coming in sixth, but that does not diminish the value of the interview with Walsh, which you can find here.
